In this unprecedented time, we wanted to do something tangible to help and, using our existing design and manufacturing capabilities, we are proud to have been able to design and create a range of Fabric Face Masks and an Active Snood (designed for exercise).

President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that it is mandatory for every South African to wear a cloth mask when in public to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Whether you’re on your way to work, making a quick grocery store run, or walking, running or cycling around the neighbourhood, our fabric face masks and active snoods have got you covered.

We’re stoked to have launched our own range of Fabric Face Masks and Active Snood, available online and ready to be delivered to your door anywhere in South Africa. And the best bit? They’re handmade in Cape Town by a local women’s empowerment project. Unemployment is a huge debilitating factor here in South Africa, now more than ever before, and so our fast pivot into PPE (personal protective equipment) manufacturing – and your incredible support – has created much-needed jobs.

Plus, a portion of proceeds from all sales goes towards providing face masks to those most vulnerable and less fortunate. Read more about this here.

If you’re looking for double- or triple-layered fabric face masks in South Africa, browse our range below and place your order. We will deliver to your door as fast as we possibly can.

While cloth face masks and our Active Snood will not prevent you from contracting coronavirus, they do assist in preventing transmission from person to person by reducing the transmission of droplets when you sneeze or cough, reducing the amount of droplets you inhale, reducing exposure in overcrowded areas, and reminding you not to touch your face. In addition, by using a cloth mask, we can reduce the demand for medical grade N95 respiratory masks and surgical masks, which are needed by essential health workers.

  • Cover your mouth and your nose with the fabric face mask or Active Snood
  • Avoid touching the mask or Active Snood while wearing it
  • When removing a face mask, do so by only touching the ties (do not touch the front of the mask)
  • When removing an Active Snood, pull it over your head from the back whilst ensuring that the exterior of the snood does not touch your face
  • Wash before first use and after every single wear with soap and water at 40 degrees
  • Once completely dry, iron the mask or Active Snood (the best means of disinfection)
  • It is recommended to have 3 masks or Active Snoods — one to wear, one in the wash, and one in case of emergency / both others need to be washed
  • Store your masks or Active Snoods in a clean tupperware in between wears and make sure to regularly disinfect the tupperware too

The driving force behind Sexy Socks has always been our mission to make a difference in South Africa (for every single pair of Sexy Socks sold, we give a pair of school socks to a child in need), so when we started manufacturing fabric face masks, it was only natural that we would want a portion of all proceeds to go towards providing face masks to those most vulnerable and less fortunate.

With your incredible support of our face masks, we have been able to donate face masks to more than 350 people, including a local retirement home and over 40 families in Khayelitsha in partnership with Juma Art Tours.

Juma Art Tours is a social enterprise run by Juma Mkwela whose aim is to create positive and sustainable change in Cape Town through art tours and community projects that connect the most vulnerable with those visiting this beautiful place we call home. Find out more about their amazing initiatives here.

Juma Art Tours has been doing incredible work during the COVID-19 pandemic in Cape Town, distributing critical food supplies and face masks to families in need in Khayelitsha. We are super proud to be working alongside Juma and his team and have donated 200 face masks to be delivered alongside their food supplies so far.

These strange and scary times have brought Juma’s regular community tours to a standstill, but his mission to connect people across socio-economic, cultural and racial backgrounds remains unchanged. We are calling on you to help us make a difference and stay connected by donating to Juma Art Tour’s Crowdfunding Campaign – Connecting our Global Family in Times of Coronavirus.

Your donation – no matter how small – will go a long way in helping purchase food supplies and feed families in need during this time. Head this way if you would like to help.

Have you got your face mask yet? Our fabric face masks and active snoods have got you covered and a portion of each sale will go towards providing face masks for those in need.

If you, like us, love bold styles, bright colours and African-inspired design, then Stanley Gabriel’s Instagram feed will surely have you doing the double-tap. Stanley never fails to deliver a perfectly crafted look and his feed is filled with all the fashion inspiration you need… and of course, good socks. We chatted to him about his personal style, his go-to wardrobe staples and his favourite pair of Sexy Socks.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I am a Johannesburg-based financial services professional with around a decade-and-a-half of varied career experience so far, beginning in a technical actuarial role but quickly expanding into other areas. My career includes time working in the East, West and South Africa; an entrepreneurial venture; a stint as a Chief of Staff; strategy roles and running an innovation function and digital channel. I currently run the digital client experience function for a major South African insurance group, incorporating digital business models and design, advanced analytics, insights, CX (customer experience), client communication, campaigning, social media and digital marketing. I am a major fan of Instagram (@stanleygabriel), and recently launched a podcast titled Sizoba’Right with Sibs and Stan, with Sibaphiwe Matiyela reflecting my passion for storytelling and living a purposeful life.

How would you describe your personal style?

I would use the words Pan African chic and simplicity to describe my style. I largely wear clothing inspired by different tribes on the continent. I dress in bright, patterned and relaxed African wear.

What are your go-to wardrobe staples?

Formal African wear from West Africa called Bubba and Sokoto.

What is your favourite fashion trend at the moment?

I don’t really follow trends but I love how men are starting to bend the rules in terms of gender bending outfits. I love that men can wear kimonos, skirts or dresses and not feel emasculated.

What did you love most about the Sexy Socks that you received?

The colour (yellow is my favourite colour) and the S because that’s the letter of my name too so it means more than Sexy Socks to me.

Last one, favourite pair of socks from the entire Sexy Socks’ range?

For a recent wedding; we got all the groomsmen the Big 5 socks and that was a special bonding moment. So I think those are my faves.

And remember, follow us at @sexysockssa for a daily dose of socks appeal.

It has been a truly incredible year for us here at Sexy Socks, and a year of great growth too. Today, Dave Hutchison, Founder of Sexy Socks, reflects on the highlights of 2019 and what he is looking forward to most in the new year.

What were the highlights of 2019?

  • Edging ever closer to the milestone of 100 000 pairs of school socks donated, and working with various wonderful organisations along the way who are also on a mission to make South Africa a better place. There are so many people running incredible projects, and I love that we can become a part of their story too.
  • Launching our Out of Africa range, and seeing the hugely positive response from our customers.
  • Spreading our wings and gaining traction in Namibia, and most recently, Australia!
  • Expanding our offering to include a cotton range with a host of epic designs.

What was the most important lesson you learnt in 2019?

On the whole, everyone wants to make a difference. If you can tell them what you are doing, tell them why it is important, and ask them for help, nine times out of ten they will go above and beyond to get on board and help you.

If you had to describe 2019 in three words, what would they be?

Bold. Humbling. Exhilarating.

Give us the low down on the 2019 sock drops…

This year our sock drops have taken place everywhere from Groendal to Capricorn. The sock drops are always special as they remind us why we do what we do. There is so much potential in our country, and the excitement on the kids’ faces never gets old. The message we tried to get across this year was ‘What can you do everyday to make your community, and ultimately, South Africa, a better place?’. Every little bit of effort can make our country a better place, no matter how small. We have also worked closely this year with Santa’s Shoebox, Rubi’s Rainbow of Hope, Aaron’s Rock Your Socks, and Odd Socks to share school socks far and wide!

What are you most looking forward to in 2020?

We look forward to introducing many new people from many new countries and cultures to what we are all about.

Without your support we would not be where we are today, so a BIG thank you from us! We’re looking forward to 2020 and all the exciting things on the cards.
